MySQL and SuSE 7.1

Hi all,

installing MySQL in SuSE 7.1 seems to not work as it should... but I don't understand what's happening:

Whenever I start the safe_mysqld, it ends after few seconds without_error_messages.

I did install the databases, but there might be a problem with the directory-structure - or at least I don't understand why it did make two sql-subdirectories automatically when installing.

Any idea what to do? Which information do you need to help me? (I have close to zero experience with SQL, so any help is greatly appreciated.)

Ok... I can be more precise.

Maybe that helps you understand my problem:

I did:

mysql_install_db

that worked fine.

I do:

./bin/safe_mysqld --user=mysql &

I get:

Starting mysql daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
mysqld ended.

so its not running.

I look in
/var/lib/mysql/bioz3-visit1.err

and it says:

010424 18:06:10 mysqld started
/usr/sbin/mysqld: File './bioz3-visit1-bin.index' not found (Errcode: 13)
010424 18:06:11 Could not use bioz3-visit1-bin for logging (error 13)
010424 18:06:11 /usr/sbin/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
010424 18:06:11 mysqld ended

So, the problem is easy: Something is wrong with my directories.

But I can not figure out

1) how this happened (I did a standart installation under YAST without any special whishes about directories or whatever, and, followed all howto's that I could get hold of... which was the mysql-howto in the packages-directory)

2) more importantly, HOW DO I GET MYSQL RUNNING !!!??? Please, help me if you can. I really don't know what to do...

check the location of the mysql database files and use that in the command line when starting mysql. look at the mysql start script under /rc.d/init.d and modify it there.

check the the ownership and permissions of the mysql db files. make sure mysql.mysql can read/write to the mysql db files.

I also found that after i changed permissions, I ran TOP and saw several MYSQL's running.
so i killall mysql
and...the rest is history..

note: i had errors while installing...
it could not write to some directory...
i rm mysql.config
./configure (without the directory listed)
and that too was history.

try this 'un :

safe_mysqld --user=root &

and see if'n thaat works.

note: i get this all the time when i build new systems, so i gotta keep notes. drives a bugger buggy!
