Using MySQL with PHP

Hi,

I've been trying to use MySQL with PHP. I have the latest version of PHP and MySQL installed on my system. When ever I try to connect to a database I get the following error though:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /var/www/html/demo.php on line 4

I thought that PHP 4 was supposed to have these functions built in ... am I wrong? Please help if you can.

Make a php file that has this function call

phpinfo();

Load it up and you'll see your specs. If you can't find any mention of mysql you need to reconfigure, recompile or reinstall.

When you call phpinfo (), look out for the following line in "Configure Command":

--with-mysql

If this line is available in "Configure Command", theis means that your PHP was installed with the ability to use MySQL as your database.

I was wondering if one of you guys could help. I'm running Apache for Windows with mySQL and php and everything's worked fine for about a month and now suddenly I'm getting the error msg 'cannot connect to mySQL database on localhost' whenever I try to access my database tables.
I keep reloading the whole wamp package-which works for a while then I get the error messages again.
The only thing I can think of is that I recently saved multiple html filenames in my table in the form (ie comma separated)
index.html,index1.html,index2,html
Could thsi cause some sort of mySQL exception which locks me out?????
Please help-I was halfway through building a server driven website!!

Ok,

It says --without-mysql. Is there anyway I can change this without recompiling?
