I am working on this project and I am doing the php work but not the db(mysql administration) work the guy tring to do the db part asked me if there is a way to recreate the /tmp/mysql.sock file after it has been delated. Any help would be great.

I did accidentally delete this file but after I reboot it was recreated.

This file is created by the mysqld to let mysql clients know how to connect to the server. The /tmp directory is not really a good place to store it by the way.

Just restart the mysqld and the file should be re-created (a reboot means restarting the mysqld too, that's why Kait's solution works too)

Thanks, but he tried rebooting becuase that is what I told him. But MySQLd just starts and then dies right away.

Is the /tmp directory writable by the mysql user?
Are there any messages in the your_hostname.err file?
Anything in the /var/log/messages?
