Is there a good workaround for mySQL's lack of trigger support?

Not really... you'll just have to be VERY careful with your code if you are used to using triggers to maintain consistency across denormalized fields.

IIRC, triggers were not part of the SQL standard until SQL-99. MySQL aims eventually to be SQL-99 compliant, but that's a long way off.
