MySQL help -- mysql.sock

the MySQL server will not start. It was running fine, now it starts then ends immediately. The mysql.sock file is NOT in the /tmp directory. How do I recreate this file? Or, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Bill,

search your server for the mysql.server file... when you find it, I think you type:

sh mysql.server start

if you open it up, it contains instructions on how to set it up in your init processes...

I know HOW to start the server, it just dies immediately. How do I recreate the mysql.sock file which resides in /tmp?

You don't , the server creates that when it starts.
And removes it when it stops.
There must be something else wrong with your configuration.

Did you check the syslog and mysql err.your_hostname?
Did you check your mysql startup script for any typos?

this probleem arises during installing MySql

The server ran fine for a month and then died one day. Now it when you run safe_mysqld it says:

./safe_mysqld &

[1] 1289

Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /opt/software/mysql/var

mysqld daemon ended

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Turned out that the REAL problem had to do with the grant tables. I removed the 'mysql' directory from /var and then ran mysql_install_db and it fixed the problem. Thanks for all the help!

This is mani from Aries.com private limited.I was also having the same problem in mysql ,my sql server starts and simultaneously ended down.I think ur get,while i was checking the mysql.sock file in tmp directory it was missing.Where to ge the sock file and do u have a solution please send me,where and how to get it.

Hi Mani.
I have had the same problem the last two days on a SuSE Linux machine. I think the solution is to go into the mysql folder and start scripts/mysql_install_db. And then you type bin/safe_mysqld & in your shell.

what were the contents of the directory before you deleted it? I don't have a mysql dir. in my /var dir.

Probably you had running demon during deleting the folders.

Try:

killall -KILL mysqld
service mysqld start
or
/usr/bin/mysqld &
