What am i in for?

Hello php'ers. I am on a journey to create a site similar to www.pricewatch.com. I have the layout that i want and know and understand what i want the site to acomplish. I am very new to php and am in dying need of some advice from a few PHP gurus..Please look at the site and you will have a better understanding of what i am trying to do. http://www.eHagglers.com

I want the site to allow companies to list there items, prices, description as well as pay me to post there listings, just like pricewatch.com. I want the category links on the home page to run queries on the DB and pull up any items either in the categories listing or sub cat. If you look at pricewatch.com, you willknow what i want to acomplish.. Am i in for a hell ride? Or is there a better way?? Please enlighten me..

Not at all, it's fairly straightforward database stuff really. You could do a lot worse than buy a copy of Wrox's 'Beginning PHP programming', it covers everything you will need to know for your particular project and more... Let me know if you need to know anything sepcific for that kind of project, I've done similar before

Cool, and thanx for your reply...I will go pick it up at bookpool.com.. Where should i start? Should i first create the interface portions to both my admin section and the merchants sign up section or does it really matter? Also, how much would something like this cost if i were to pay someone to do it? One more thing, How long should this take for me to do? im thinking maybe 3months?? Thanks again...

I'd work out your database fields first, but other than that, it's personal preference. How long it would take depends on how quick you learn really, but I would expect 3 months would be tops. It would cost around 1 or 2 thousand GPB in the UK for a professionally done job.
