is it possible to compile a .a file to a .so ?
Is anybody here using informix with php that can help me ?

if you're using PHP 4.0.4pl1 on RH linux Intel 6.2 or later, I'll email you my informix.so file which you can just plug in. Just email me with your email address. Otherwise, you'll need to compile it into php. You must have the informix client software development kit to do that.
