Apache does not work with the IE

When i trie to open http://localhost in the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or the Netscape Communicator 4.77 i allways get an error (The requested URL could not be retrieved). However it is possible to access the Apache Webserver in OPERA 5 without problems.
How can i solve this problem?

maybe add localhost 127.0.0.1 to your C:\windows\hosts on 98 or C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts on nt.. (i think)

I am pretty sure that 98 doesn't have an entry by default.

Yep, try 127.0.0.1 - also be aware the Opera has some idiosyncrasies when compared directly to IE (e.g., file uploads)..

You do have a network card installed and your computer on a network??

I had a similar problem to this - localhost 404ing - or ie automatically searching the web for "localhost" - when i was trying to set up apache on my windows machine.

Heres what i did to sort it out -

Went into control Panel and chose Add New Hardware (even though i had none to add)

didn't do the auto detect because i had not added anything - instead i told it i had a network card and it should install it from the windows (98) CD - It did this.

It then asked me to restart (supprise)
- i did and it failed on various files and things (because there was no network card and also some of the files didn't get read of the install cd - i just told it to skip them because i knew i didnt even have a network card and was only interested in getting the computer to know about 127.0.0.1 - localhost

I made a note of every file that told me it was missing while booting.

I then went through autoexec, system.ini removing any of the files that where missing

I then opened up the registry and did the same - searching and removing the files (strongly suggest backing up registry before doing this)

I then restarted again - and it booted up fine, when i typed in http://127.0.0.1 into IE it connected to apache and apache server the index page - TA DAAAA !

Since this hack I have heard about "loopback" software which essentially does the same thing - but this worked for me and it was a free fix 🙂

EVERY computer knows localhost is 127.0.0.1
as soon as tcp/ip is installed...

so adding 'localhost 127.0.0.1' to you hosts file or adding a fake network card (wich is even more stupid) is bogus.

Try looking for your solution in your apache conf. or maybe in you browsers settings (proxy, etc)

That is not true. I just deleted the localhost entry on my linux box and localhost is no longer reachable.

Ha haaaa Jeroen - you offensive phucker - im only writing what i did and what worked for the problem that i had - which is the same problem that this user had.

Without doing this my windows box didn't know about local host.

Adding localhost to the host file didn't work because the computer didn't know about 127.0.0.1 either.

Creating the bogus network card fixed this and made it know about both.

I was then able to add multiple virtual hosts listening on the same port using my hosts file and httpd.conf

Before shooting your mouth off stop and think what you are writing- theres no point being offensive - and whats your solution then mr smart arse? - quick to flame others arent you you troll!

....and yes i had tcp/ip protocol installed as this was one of the first things i tried.

anyway. I still remain at my point that any operating system knows about localhost and it being 127.0.0.1 as soon as tcp/ip is installed.
If you afterwards start editting system files or whatever, well then you can rip out anything.

and before you start shooting your mouth off, I wasn't being offensive. I merely tried to keep him from doing something like adding a fake network card like you did.

thanx for your mails, but non of your tips worked...
here is some more information about my system:
-tcp/ip is installed
-i have windows 98 2nd edition
-i have a small network (3 PCs)
-in the c:\windows\hosts.sam there is one line saying: localhost 127.0.0.1
-i have apache 1.3.20win
-i have php405

Rename hosts.sam file to just hosts and then it should work.

Windows 9x does NOT automatically configure 127.0.0.1 for some reason I don't and never will understand. Weird choice by MS there, but renaming hosts.sam to hosts should get your loopback address running.

Why it may work with out having a hosts file is the fact that some DNS servers will return 127.0.0.1 when ever localhost is requested.

This is why Jeroen's computers just know about localhost when TCP/IP is installed. Any host with proper tcp/ip installed will know about 127.0.0.1 but only a hosts file or dns can resolve localhost.

Do you have an arguement with this Jeroen?

ping localhost

and tell us what that says.

the ping allways returns within 10ms from localhost (127.0.0.1).

Then it's likely an IE problem. Not sure though, just the most likely culprit.

Win98 (assumes you have TCP/IP installed and a NIC.)
Hosts file is in C:\windows dir.
It has a line in it 127.0.0.1 localhost
Reboot or do nbtstat -R (must be cap R)

127.0.0.1 is considered the loopback for the local machine itself, not the network adapter. It is how the machine routes between packet destined for the local machine or the network the NIC adapter is connected to. Every windows machine behaves in this same configuration. To get at this web site from other machines on your network, they will have to connect via the IP on the NIC card.

Fix the hosts file first.

If you have made to many changes, as suggested from others in the forum, your TCP/IP stack "may" be hosed and it would be time for a re-install. 98 out of the box with TCP/IP installed should be fine understanding the local host and you should not have to mess with the hosts file.

Sorry Dwight, but i tried this several times; without success...
What i can't understand is, that the OPERA 5 Browser works without problems, but Netscape 4.77, 6.0 and Microsoft IE 5.5 just can't find the localhost.

That is really strange, because it works that way without any changes to the OS.
Do the other machines on your network work correctly browsing when pointing I.E. or Netscape to the machine in question? No proxy settings in the browsers?

The only other things I can think of is:

Change the entry in the hosts file to point localhost to the NIC ip (if static)
Make sure you don't have any proxy clients loaded. (i.e. MSP)
Use another name and point it to the NIC ip in the hosts file. (i.e. www.thispc.com)
Reinstall 98. I know this is not the best option.

It's working...
I just went to
Extras -> Internetoptions
Connections -> LAN-Setup
then I enabled the checkbox: "Do not use proxy servers for local adresses"
And then it worked...
