MySQL - Public Access

Yet another MySQL newbie question;

Having trawled through the mysql manual I'm still confused as to how to allow the public to connect to my DB via a website without using my root user and password in the mysql_connect part....

I know it sounds really stupid but I can't work out how to add a user with just the ability to select items from the db.....

yeah, I've read it but I'm still having problems...
whenever I create a new user, I always get access denied when trying to connect to mysql, through php or telnet.

It's like I'm getting the privelege wrong just to connect?

What's the exact error message you get?

ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'drucifer@localhost' (Using password: YES)

This is when trying to log in to myswl on telnet....

the user definately exists and i've given it a password but must be screwing up priveleges somewhere...

Did you grant the permissions like this:

GRANT all on database.table to user@localhost indetified by 'password'

And made sure that the '@' is the hostname of the database server that you want to logon to?

well, i just spoke to support who say that it's possible that mysql was grabbing user probiels from an older installation of mysql and thus confusing itself as i have tried the grant thing which i think I did right...

anyway, I'm doing a totally clean install of mysql now and see where I go from there...
