What are the Advantages and disadvantages of MS Access over other databases such as MySQL or Oracle for eaxample.

Advantage:
You can access it using MS-Access

Disadvantages:
It's not a real database.
It's slow.
It's not portable.
It's not compatible with databases.
It's Micros*ft.

The only advantage the Access could have is that it is native to windows enviroments and relatively cheap, but then again you can install MySQL on windows so who cares.

Speed!!!
I did some real estate sites and I really really regret having to use Access!!! I would have rather gone with MyODBC.
Mysql is MUCH more stable, quicker and easier to use.

One thing that I could not figure out in Access and PHP was how to use a Next/Prev function. PHP / mysql work well on that particular functionality.

But if you want to see how slow' access is, goto http://www.godfreyrealty.com and you will see what I mean. Click on the Residential listings! VERY SLOW... But the client insisted on MS!

As far as Oracle, I've never used it. I'm sure its very reliable. But you must have heard how Nasa has gone to Mysql over oracle.

Oracle is really in a different ball game altogether. MySQL is a light wieght database without much of the functionality of Oracle such as stored procedures, foriegn keys and transactions. Of course the price for Oracle is in the thousands of dollars compared to free, I've also heard the latest version of MySQL has transactions but haven't had a chance to play with them.

Nasa has gone from oracle to mysql, but only for the "NASA Acquisition Internet Service". (they are not that stupid)
MySQL is no match whatsoever for Oracle when it comes to heavy-duty applications. 🙂

You can use ODBC drivers to view and edit MySQL or Oracle tables through the Access interface if you want.

Well, it's certainly OK as a report-writer front end, when hooked up via ODBC to a real database as a back end.

MS-Access is a toy, and should only be played with. It was never designed to compete with Oracle, or they would have dropped MS-SQLserver.

If you want to do something serious, use PostgreSQL or Oracle (if you can afford it).
