Java is your answer unless you use Netscape and then you can use Server Push technology utilizing a combination of scripts.
You can create a C program that will be run 'persistently' via a shell script or crontab which will constantly check your database(s) and see if something is new (by querying mysql processes 'SHOW PROCESSLIST') and then spitting the results (i.e. new processes since last check, new inserts, etc) to the browser.
The other way, to eliminate the need for Server Push to the browser, is to create your crontab entry with 'nohup myscript &'. This will spit your output to a nohup.out file for you to view at any time and will allow you to go about your business and check whenever you want.
