Oracle/PHP - good alternative?

I realize that many people have fully deployed php applications that run off an Oracle database. But I've also read in a couple of places that PHP's support for Oracle isn't great. Can someone with experience in setting up a PHP/Oracle application please let me know whether they think PHP or ASP is the way to go for Oracle backed applications.

At my previous 2 jobs we were using Oracle with PHP. PHP has some pretty good functions for working with Oracle, everything you might need is there. The toughest part was writing a wrapper that interfaces with the stored procedures, which didnt take too long. So yes, PHP and Oracle get along great together.

I find php running from windows gets errors on -some- computers, but running php from linux/unix is fine when connecting to oracle db's.

The OCI is used so there isn't a lot that php needs to do special w/ oracle...it just uses its api.

I have used PHP and Oracle on an enterprise level running huge databases and found that over our intranet we noticed that performance was fantastic. I began my PHP in that environment. I created medical and DBA applications that interfaced with LDAP and Oracle as well. All php was done on a Redhat server with apache.

I've used it on W2k (damn enviroment, I know).
Yes, the combination it's great but you have to work on an abstraction layer.
The Oracle API it's quite a crap, nothing compared to MySQL, besides it doesn't have a way to get the last insert id, so you have to solve that too.
Once you get it done, it's fabulous.

You should always use oracle's sequences when working with oracle. If you use these then you will know the equivelent of the last insert id.
