Mysql + Linking to Files

Hi,

Im currently setting up a database to display the status of documents (version's available). Although this isnt too much of problem I also want allow users to be able to download/open the document by clicking on the returned row from the database:

i.e

ID FileName Version
1 Scope Doc 1-0

I want users to be able to click on Scope Doc to view it.

Any ideas to help (tutorials) or even the code?

I assume you also store the location of the file in your database?

Hi there,

I'm open to suggestions at present, I suppose I could supply the location of the file (within a directory). I need to bear in mind that the file names are continuely changing.

i.e Setup-v1.0.pdf -> Setup-v1.1.pdf

Would this cause a major headache?

Objective: Want a means of displaying to the user a list of all my files (held in mysql database) and allow them to click on the title to download.

As I only wish them to have a view access of the DB I'm also trying to build an Admin front end which would allow me to update the database fields with ease..

Any suggestions very much appricated

Well, you can only link to a file if you know it's filename.
So your admin side must keep the filename and location in the mysql table in order to be able to link to it.

Ok, therefore I presume I need to make a new column in my DB (File_Location) and add the file name/path (any specific format?).

How do I then get that file to be displayed in the table (to the user) without the whole path being displayed.

i.e Am I able to display a columns fields form the database with a hyper link to the file..

Do you know of any tutorials to help me with this?

Indeed, you'd add a column that contains the filename and location of the file.
You can ofcourse store the path and the filename seperately, so you can print the filename in the list, and print the filename+path in the href.
