mySQL on shared drive

I put mySQL on my server and I'd like to edit on my computer. I set up the 'mysql' folder as a shared drive on my computer as drive 'I'. Now if I try to run "i:\bin\mysql" it gives me an error message:
"Error 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' <10061>"
I'm guessing because of a password problem?? I know everything works correctly if I access it from the server, but I'd like to do it from the computer I'm on. Any help will be appreciated.

Did you tel the mysql client program which server it should connect to?

I'm simply just trying to do it through the DOS promt. If you can call that a client program. It would seem to me that I should be able to work with mySQL on a shared drive the same way as if it were on my own hard drive.

Any program used to talk to a server is a client.

Anyway, you didn't answer the question. Did you or didn't you tell the mysql client program which server to connect to?

OK, I got that part to work now. Thank you! You made me think about it. I didn't think I'd have to connect because it was on a shared drive, but I guess it usually uses the default 'localhost' which is different from my 'localhost'.

I'm about to post my next problem if you would like to help me on that.
