performance problem

Our website use php3+mysql,the page view is about 30K pages per day.
Hardware is Compaq Proliant 1600,PII550,512M Ram.
But the speed is very slowly.
About 20s per page or more!
Can you help me?

Are you using indexes on your tables?

30k pages a day is about one a second average, quite a few more peak.

What's your read/write ratio? If your site has lots of writing, mysql will starve due to it's coarse table locking mechanism.

What OS are you running? Windows NT/2k are not very fast under PHP right now due to the differences in how both are designed. Unix is the preferred platform for high performance of PHP.

Are most of the hits on the main index.html page? If so, you can extract this every few minutes with a wget http:server.com/index.php3 index.html to speed it up.

If you're going to be doing a lot of writes then look at postgresql. It's got one of the best scaling locking mechanisms built in called MVCC.

It scales to literally dozens or transactions per second on a small machine like a 500MHz K6-2 with 128 Megs of ram, in a highly concurrent environment. Definitely get version 7.0.2, as it is much faster and sturdier than 6.5.3 was.
