is it possible to select only the first 100 characters from a field of lets say 1000 characters ,
if so can someone point me in the right direction or suggest an alternative

I can only tell you how to do it in Mysql. Take a look, it's pretty simple:
Select SUBSTRING(YourField, 1, 100) from YourDatabase
