Persistent or No?

I'm new to PHP... I just want an opinion...
when would i use persistent connections and when wouldn't I?

You would when:
- You are in desperate need of speed.
- You have the resources to keep lots of connections open for a long time.

You would not when:
- You have a limited number of connections available on the database server.
- You are low on system resources.
- You don't care about a few hundred milliseconds delay on opening a database query.

-not when you are using PostgreSQL (or have they fixed the problems with postres pconnect yet?)
