I have downloaded PHPNuke... it gives me a file "nuke.sql" Now how do I create an active DB from that file?

Are you trying to use nuke with MSSQL? I thought nuke used MySQL. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I wouldn't be suprised if I am. Anyways, in mysql, you should be able to do something like (at a command line)

"mysql nukes.sql > your_database"

It's admitedly been a while, but that should do if MySQL. If it is MSSQL, you may wish to check the documentation and hope that ole Bill doesn't charge you for the priviledge.

well, erm yes. I have only just moved onto PHP and SQL from ASP and access, so i dont know much about it... but PHPNuke does say MySQL, is this drastically different from MSSQL?

(oh and i have never given big gay bill any of my money and i never intend to. i live off free beta versions and leeched stuff.)

Ya,

There's a pretty big difference between MSSQL and MySQL, excluding obvious stuff like cost differences, Open Source vs. Closed, etc. Most of the differences boil down to different target audiences.

MSSQL aims to be an enterprise-level DBMS competing with other platforms like Oracle and IBM's DB2. MySQL on the other hand, is not an enterprise-level db and is aimed at small to mid sized data environments. MySQL doesn't have things like foreign keys and doesn't support nested sub-queries or stored procedures. All table joins must be created in the SQL query, and exist only during that query's execution time. MySQL's goal is to be extremely fast and sacrifices many of the features that enterprise-level DB's offer to do it. However, since probably only about 15% of all current sites are ever going to really need the level of features offered by MSSQL, Oracle, etc. it's not a really big deal.

well... i was just wondering cos i dont want to have MSSQL7 AND MySQL... if i only need one of them... how would i do what morpheus() said, but with MSSQL7?

Well, since Geoff allready explained the difference in the two. I'll keep my mouth shut.

However, I would like to apologize if I upset you with my quip about Bill. It wasn't meant as a dig against you.

Now if you are still interested in using PHPnuke with MSSQL, before asking yourself if you can use the nuke.sql dump file with MSSQL, you should ask if the <i>rest</i> of the Nuke code will work with MSSQL. If there is some abstraction at the db level, it may be just a matter of stating which db you are using in a config file.

However, my brief encounter with Nuke recollects nothing of the sort. Instead, there is MySQL support alone. You could rewrite the code on your own to support MSSQL, but do you, or are you ready, to do that much work?

Perhaps supporting more than one db is something the Nuke developers should consider if they don't, or aren't allready thinking about it.

Well, like morpheus() said in his most recent reply, you probably could make PHPNuke run on MSSQL..... but you'd need to hack all the sql statements to make sure that they are MSSQL compliant AND you'd need to hack the entire PHPNuke script series to change the abstraction layer from MySQL to MSSQL. Alternatively you could download an abstraction layer which already supports MSSQL and then hack PHPNuke to use that abstraction. If you're interested in that route I have an abstraction class which supports MySQL, MSSQL, ODBC, and FrontBase which you can grab. However, it still comes down to alot of work to port the proggie to MSSQL. While you may not like having to run both, it's probably best to grab MySQL and run on that, at least while you're porting.

Besides, based on your original post it sounds like you may not have the proper licenses to run MSSQL. MS is well know for taking a pretty dim view of people using unlicensed versions of their software🙂 Are you willing to take the risks implied by their current anti-piracy campaign? MySQL is free as long as your applications and their usage conforms to the GPL. If you don't wish to use the GPL, licensing starts at 230 Euros. Still much cheaper than either buying MSSQL licenses, or paying the penalties associated with running unlicensed software. Just some food for thought🙂
