1) Verify that the username/password and host are correct for your new machine.
2) Try to connect to mysql from your prompt
mysql -uroot -hlocalhost leave the -h.
3) Look for mysql.sock, this should be loacated in /tmp /var/mysql, if you find more than one of these files, you have 2 mysql's installed. Which means you should clean up one.
Note: When you take a rpm out with rpm, it just takes it out of the list, you have to clean up the binaries.
