Fatal Error with mySQL connection

I'm getting the error, "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /home/user/myphpmysqldatabasefile.php on line 2." I'm getting this error after I copied all my files from one linux server to another linux server. I'm using php 4, mysql, and Red Hat 7.1 on my server. I used mysqldump to convert my databases to single files and then I used mysql on the new server to convert the files back into the database. I can access the files from the command line but I can't seem to access them from my php scripts. Everything worked fine from my other server. I think I need to reinstall php with mysql support. But I can't seem to compile anything. And when I try to use a rpm to install php I get a message that the package is already installed. And when I try to uninstall it I get a message saying that it couldn't find the package. Any help would be great!!!!

1) Verify that the username/password and host are correct for your new machine.

2) Try to connect to mysql from your prompt
mysql -uroot -hlocalhost leave the -h.

3) Look for mysql.sock, this should be loacated in /tmp /var/mysql, if you find more than one of these files, you have 2 mysql's installed. Which means you should clean up one.

Note: When you take a rpm out with rpm, it just takes it out of the list, you have to clean up the binaries.

I have verrified that mysql works from the prompt.

I will try to look for the mysql.sock file.

I'm not sure how you clean up the binaries.

The password and user name are correct.

You need to find where mysql is installed:

Run this:
find / -name "mysql"

this should output /usr/local/bin/mysql or /usr/bin/mysql, based where this is installed we can determine how to compile php.

I got it fixed. With red hat 7.1 it has a seperate rpm to install mysql support.

Hi Brent,
How did you manage to fix it. Did you recomplie PHP4.06 with mysql. If you did so please tell me how. I did and try try to find the php4_mod.so file and could not find it.
I am using Redhat Linux 7.2 with the build in PHP. I installed the mysql and worked fine on the command line. When I write the script with PHP and mysql_connect() I get the FATAL ERROR. Please help
