postgres 7.1

I have two red hat 7.1 machines. On one I have successfully upgraded postgres to 7.1.3 from 7.0.x. It took awhile, but I was finally able to do it with the rpm from postgres site. On the other machine, I have been trying for days and all the time end up with non-functioning pg functions. I get an error like "undefinded function pg_pconnect()"

All the advice I have seen about this kind of error says that PHP is not compiled with postgres suppport. I install with postgres, php, pg_php, etc... everything as that is required, and it the pg_functions work after fresh install of red hat. then I attempt install these postgres 7.1 rpm and, same thing. I have tried various combos, like not installing postgres from the distrution, then installing the rpm from postgres.org. The installer doesn't like that if I want to pg_php with postgres. I have tried many combinations of install this, don't install that, install this after that, and before the other. Nothing. Same damn error.

I tried to install from the postgres..tar.gz file. I am going to try that again, because I went with defauts, and I think that red hat has different directory structure (usr/lib not usr/local).

Can anyone can give me a clue which way to go now? I really need outer-joins for what I am doing.

It's "possible" that you are installing out of order (I did it before from source). Make sure Postgres is installed before PHP is, or recompile PHP when psotgres is installed. Good luck hth.

I am pretty new to linux. Reading a lot, total weekend immersion. (I have a zope site running, and am porting some of my ASP work to php/postgres). Point is, I'm still newbie.

So I am wondering about re-compiling PHP, which I don't exactly know how to do. Is it just as good to reinstall the PHP rpm from the red hat CDs? Then the php_pg rpm? So far this hasn't seemed to be good enough.

Or maybe I am just doing things in the wrong order, as you suggested and I suspected.

I have everything reinstalled now, and just confirmed that all works as expected. I use phpPgAdmin 2.3, and that is connecting to 7.0 postgres.

The postgres site has a folder for red hat 7.1 with all the rpms. I just need the main one, the server and the libs. I install the libs first, then the main, then the server.

Oh well, tomorrow morning I am going to give it another try. Any other insights are gratefully welcome.

I gotta be honest, I've installed PHP about 15 times in the past year and, with the exception of one time, have always done it from source. (It seems easier to me, go figure). I haven't found anything definitive about the order of things, like PHP coughing an error if it doesn't find Postgres, but it does makes sense.

Have you tried the new phppgadmin 3.0? I use it here (I used to work with the project admin).

Where do you go for phpPgAdmin 3, do you have the tar.gz?

You were associated with that project? What happened to GreatBridge, what's to happen to the pgadmin project? Very nice app.

I'll look to see if I have the tar file of 3.0, I've noticed that greatbridge.org is shut down (bummer) and don't know yet where it is on the net.

Yea, I worked as Web Site Manager at Great Bridge for about a year, good idea, bad execution I guess. As for proejcts hosted by greatbridge.org, I've notheard anything in the last few weeks, though I suspect they'll probably move to another place (like sourceforge, no doubt.)
