Im having a problem here getting my column "id" to continue on from the last id number. I was playing around with the database adding and taking out entries and the counter seems to have jumped about 5 rows and I can't seem to get it back down...any ideas? It last left off at 17 and right now if I insert a new row the id get set to 23 when it should be 18...
auto_increment does not re-use numbers. That is by design, and it is a good thing. It guarantees taht the number will always be unique.
so there is no way to go back then?
There is no point in going back. The auto_increment numbers are meant as record identifiers, nobody ever sees them. Also, re-using them may cause inconsistancies in the data.
