Apache & pws not running on localhost

Hey there, I enjoy reading the helpful tips and tricks on this forum. I have a small problem. I have PHP APACHE & MYSQL running on my win98 se machine. Problem is...I cant get the outside world to access me when running apache. I cant even access my server when i type in a hostname ( localhost )
I type in an IP 127.0.0.1 and it works fine.
I double checked the hosts.sams file and setup the host names..but still no juice. Anyone have any suggestions or tips they could send my way.

Do you get any error messages?
What exactly happens (or does not happen)

I type in the addy:
http://localhost/

and get connection refused.

It is really wierd.
When I type in 127.0.0.1 it comes up perfectly.

Any ideas?

Is the localhost entry in your hosts file?

Yep. It really says connection refused.
I do have my hosts.sams file with 127.0.0.1 and then a couple spaces then it says localhost.

I type in local host when apache or Personal web server is running and it says :

Connection Refused

Description: Connection Refused

Just like that :-)

Any suggestions??

hosts.sams is a sample file isn't it? should the real name be "hosts"?
