Oracle Speed

Hi,

I have a question. I have a Compaq True64 Unix System working with php and the OCI8 as dynamic library (the was no way to compile it into True64) If I make a simple Oracle insert, select and delete it takes about 0.3s, the same (same SQL and same database)on a Win98 php OCI8 takes also 0.3s.
If do the same thing in MySQL it takes 0.01 with the True64 and 0.02 with the Win98 system. This is about 2-3 times faster than oracle. Is there anything that I can do to improve the operation speed of the php-oracle ?

Check out a few Oracle websites, they have tons of tips how to improve speed.

Also, don't forget that MySQL was built for speed, and nothing else. Oracle was built for reliability, functionality and robustness.

.3 vs .01 is more like 20 to 30 times faster but anyway for Oracle .3 is great performance doubt if anything can be improved.

The issue is more about the target audience of the respective products.

I have used Oracle for 8 years in four different companies and in that time only needed to resort to tape once (cause some dumb guy deleted an archive file) and on average it crashes once a year.

I have used mySQL in the past and had no problem with it but I am told that it crashes/screws up data a lot more frequently.

Oracle is built for reliability, mySQL is built for speed.

But that's not what's most important in a database, what is important is how fast it is when you've got 10, 100, or a 1,000 users.

At that point, MySQL would have long since collapsed under the load, but Oracle will likely still be chugging along just fine.

Build a page that randomly inserts a row, selects it, then deletes it. Then call it with ab (Apache aBuse/Benchmark) with -n 10 -c 100 and see how it behaves on both.

OK,

that is the answer that I was looking for. So is it right, that it takes 0.3 for one user at the same time and it will also take about 0.3 for 10 or 100 people at the same time, but not 10x or 100x the 0.3!
So I don't have to worry that:
if one person loads the page and needs 1,5 seconds, that 15 persons at the time will take 15 seconds ?

Well, it'll probably not still be just 0.3, but it probably won't go up linearly (i.e. 10 users will not equal 3 second response times, but something like 0.5 to 1.0 a piece.)
