getting last entry

I have a mysql database, and I need to get the last entry that was added under a certain topic.

Lets say I have 2 topics, with several entries each..

Topic1,http://www.topic1.net,time added
topic1, http://www.topic1.com,time added

topic2, http://www.topic2.net, time added
topic2, http://www.topic2.com,time added

I want to only select the newest entry. how do i go about doing this?

put a timestamp column in your table then

select max(timestamp), key from table limit 1

hmm, so should the SQL look something like this?

SELECT max(time) FROM submitlink WHERE topic LIKE 'Reports' LIMIT 1

? where time is the field that has the timestamp (actually, I am using the datetime field) because i tried using that, and it doesn't work (that being the above SQL)

okay, this appears to work

$query = "SELECT max(time) FROM submitlinks WHERE topic LIKE 'Reports' LIMIT 1";

however, I need to print out the fields associated with that time (say they are called topic and description)

i would think something like

echo "$query_result[topic]"; would work, but it doesn't...

I was getting ready to say "you don't need LIMIT 1 when you're asking for max() --or any other aggregate function for that matter--it will always only return a single row.

But now your latest question turns it the other way--you can't combine aggregate functions with ordinary columns in a simple query, but you can get the effect you want by asking for the rows in reverse order, LIMIT 1:

select * from submitlinks WHERE topic LIKE 'Reports' order by time desc limit 1;
