hallo,

i need help concerning general database
theory for mysql, because i have to build
a high traffic banner rotation system.
the system will have to manage several
hundred users per second.

where is the border of mysql and how shall
the server be configured?
(assume a big & strong dell server as server)

-pconnect or connect
-max_connections ?
-seperated server db server ?
-kernel patches?
-special system
i want to sourround the "common too many connections problem"!

how many concurrent can be managed by mysql?
it will be mainly an READ system. every hit
will have to execute several queries.

i searched for ressources describing this theme, but i failed in finding a qualitative one. are there any sites or books that could help ?

pconnect, with several GB of memory for the server.

MySQL's top limit is 1024 concurrent connections. But in real life your server will die before you get to that number.

If you really plan to do hundreds of banners per second, you should think about loadbalancing, where one MySQL database is the master and the rest are slaves. This gives you n times the capacity of one server.

Will you be doing a lot of inserts too?

And are you making money off this? if so, get yourself a proper database engine, like Oracle of even Informix. They can handle a lot more than MySQL.

how could they all access the same database

loadbalancing in MySQL means that all the MySQL servers are listen to eachother constantly. If one server receives an INSERT or UPDATE request, it writes it to it;'s binary log. The other servers are listing to that log, and they will immediately copy the data from the 'master' to themselves. This way all databases on all servers are always the same.

Your banner script just needs to select a different MySQL server for each request.
