I have a database (ODBC source) that lives on a server that is different from my webserver? Can I remotely connect to the datasource? Note that the two servers are not on the same LAN (actually in two different countries!).

You can remote connect if the driver and server support it. For example I can update my Postgresql databases on a web server from home.
