Program to manage tables in database?

Hello-

Working on a PHP/MySQL project right now and it's a little complicated. I am mostly used to creating MySQL databases by hand, but am wondering if there's any program out there that would allow me to create the database concept and layout the tables on screen, allow me to setup the types and ranges for each of the values? Then it would be ideal for the program to output all that info to a text file that can be imported into the MySQL server to then configure the database on the server.

I did a few searches on Google and came up with nothing other than noise. Sorry if this is a common simple request, but it would be very helpful and new to me!

Most folks use PHPMyAdmin:

If you're looking for something that lets you draw schema using boxes and lines, and magically generates SQL, then I don't know of anything like that in the open-source world.

No, not looking for anything magic. Just thought maybe there was something out there that would look much like Excel and would allow you to visually see exactly what you are making, then output the code to upload to the server to make those specifications real.

This concept is nothing magic. There are many web page editors that allow you to create a page WYSIWYG and it will create the code to make that happen.

If you're running on Win32, or have access to a Win32 box, take a look at MyODBC. It will let you use MS Access to create, modify, and delete tables and data. MyODBC can be downloaded from www.mysql.com. This what you're thinking of?

There a free program out there: DDT = databse design toolkit, the executable on windows is, ddt.exe. You might want to check that out, it does some basic schema design and has the ability to import and export sql to set up tables.

mysqlfront is good for win32 too. not perfect (does not know all of mysql's SQL so sometimes it says a query is wrong even if it is correct) but very usefull.

it features direct editing of table data (like in a spreadsheet) importing, exporting (also directly from one database on one host to another database on another host)
and query-editing with syntax-highlighing.
(and the ever usefull: "execute selected only" so you don't have to cut/paste all the time.

If you are willing to spend a little bit ($50 USD) I've found that "Mascon" from http://www.scibit.com (for Win32 machines) does quite nicely when I get lazy... (lazy = most of the time)

The free version doesn't allow you to make / alter / drop tables as the paid version does.
