Exporting csv / fields with newslines

How do you deal with newlines in fields when exporting to comma- tab- delimited text? I usually just replace the newlines with spaces. Any way to preserve the newlines (I have to keep the line delimiter a newline - can't change it)?

CSV files don't do newlines, because a newline marks 'end of record'

You'll always have to replace the newline with something else before exporting, and replace it back after importing.

That is why real databases export to SQL files, which don't have that limitation.

I have to deal with access for a particular project (which can't import SQL afaik).

Speaking of which, are there any good (even free :-) client-side database alternatives? Something where you just distribute the db file and maybe a dll.

and how would you implement such a thing in a website? and why?

No, I'm talking about a database you could distribute with a client-side app.

under windows I would suggest ODBC with access database
under linux, dunno maybe mysql or postgresql
