ORDER BY only on first digit?

I would like to ORDER my high score table on player scores. However my ORDER BY command only looks at the first digit of their score!

My code:

$sql = "
SELECT student_name, hidden_score, date
FROM $table_name
ORDER BY hidden_score DESC
";

My results:
John 7
Mary 53
Peter 300
Azur 23
Georgie 10

when I would expect:
Peter 300
Mary 53
Azur 23
Georgie 10
John 7

Can anyone tell my is this please?

Hi Paolo,

what datatype is your scorerow ? For an numerical sorting it should be an numerical type like int etc.

Yes, good thinking... I think it may have been varchar!
