Deleting Fields and Re-numbering

Hello-
I'm new to databases, so I'm what people do in a case like this.

I have a database table with say, 10 records. The first field is an auto_increment counter. I then delete the first 5 entries, and so my remaining entries are now numbered 6 -10, but I want them to now be 1 - 5 since they are the only records that exist after the oters were deleted.

How is this issue managed? Thanks in advance.

Editing "first field is and auto_increment counter" usually also a primary key is bad news, but if you need to know.

update %my_table% set %first_field_name%=%first_field_name%-5

This is usually bad karma, beware if any other info on your dbase is liked to this table through %first_field_name%

You miss the point of the index. It is not there to number your items. It is there to provide a unique reference to your data. What the number is doesn't really matter as long as it is unique. If you want to number your data, do so after you pull it out of your table.
