MySQL - Windows vs. Linux

I have always used MySQL on Linux and have been happy with the performance. But I recenlty bought a very fast Windows 2000 machine and thought about installing the MySQL Windows binary.

I suppose I could load RedHat Linux 7.2 on the new machine and trust that Linux is faster, but I want to make an educated decision.

Are there any benchmarks available (other than the ancient stuff available at www.mysql.com)???

By the way, the server I want to use looks like this:

Dell PowerEdge 2550 (2U rack mount)
Dual 933 PIII
2 Gigs ECC RAM
2 18G SCSI drives (10,000 rpm)
Windows 2000 Advance Server

use linux uptime alone is a reason.

I run slack 8.0 on my dual p3 450 server, its fast as hell.

if performance isn't an issue on the current system then i wouldn't worry about it on the new system. it may be faster, but more importantly it'll be fast enough.

i'd ask yourself what else do you plan on running on that box? which operating system do you fill more comfortable running as a server?

if you just want to benchmark for the sake of benchmarking then use the two hard drives and setup a dual boot. find out for yourself and tell the rest of us.

You don't need to benchmark it, unix will win in the end.

And as the others have stated, windows is simply not stable enough to be used for databases, especially not a wonky mysql binary.

i have a windows 2000 advance server that has been serving a HEAVILY (500,000 hits a day) loaded trading game.

many inserts, updates, and 1000s of selects going on all the time.

bought it 6 months ago... dual 1.2ghtz amd Mp with 1GB registered pc2100 ecc ram, 18gb ultra160 scsi cheetah drive.

i didn't put linux on it because i haven't work with the smp stuff.

basically i trust the uptime of win2000... and that is the first time i've ever said that about a m$ product

I do not plan to run anything else but MySQL on this machine. I would do the benchmarks myself, but its going into a colocation facility in a few days and I will not get the opportunity to tinker much before hand.

1/2M hits/day is peanuts
1000's of selectes at all time is a bit much, MySQL's upper limit is at 1024 concurrent connections.

WIN2000 is a lot more stable than everything M$ ever made, but I'd certainly never trust it to run my applications. Not without a failover setup.

Just install an SMP kernel, or compile one with 'enable SMP' fairly straightforward.

yes... i'm talking pageviews though, but that is still relatively small.

many selects per page, and it isn't data that can be cached or selected in a smarter way... so around 100-200 concurrent php persistent connections all quering like mad.

yeah, i've read how to do that all... i've just never done it before. 1 problem that i don't know how to handle and i have to start from scratch again...

I am almost certainly going to stick with Linux, since nobody has made a compelling arguement to use Windows.

I did not think multi-processor install would even be an issue with Red Hat 7.x, but maybe I am being naive. Should I do anything special when compiling Linux or MySQL for dual processors?

On a seperate note, is there any performance advantage to be gained with MySQL 4.x ?

Just make sure you have multi processor support enabled, and it is compiled for your processor type. It won't pick these thing up automatically sometimes. (rarely ever)

About mysql, you should definately use InnoBD tables. For speed they support row-level-locking and raw-devices. For functionality they support foreign-keys and transactions.
