mysql_connect() error

Hello All,

I am a newbie to both PHP and MySQl, and I have pulling my hair out trying to get Mysql to work w/ php. I have them both working seperately, but if i try to pull simple info into a php webpage I get a mysql_connect error. I have been through docs, forums, how-tos, & google searches, with no real solutions.
What i have been finding is i need to modify either the php.ini or the httpd.conf file, which one and how? and after i have them working together, is there some privileges i need to set up to allow a simple php forum to write to it?
I am getting confused and i am just looking for a good tutorial!

Hello Vincent,

this is the error message I get when I try to configure a guestbook php script I found.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect() in /var/www/farmerdesign/html/gbook/guestbook.php on line 30

I get a similiar error with a forum php.

What am I doing wrong or what do I not have set up correctly?

Try this script:

Does it say MySQL anywhere? If not, the mysql module is not compiled with your system.

how do i configure it w/o having to reinstall?

Add --with-mysql in your configure command:

./configure --with-mysql --with.. -- etc...

I installed PHP, MySQL with Webmin using RPMs. That is probably why it is not working.
Is there a way to change the php.ini or httpd.conf to allow PHP to use MySql?

I've not installed via RPMS so i'm not sure if what I would give you would help. Check this page, it should give you what you need.
