"but I'm pretty cheap and don't want to waste money on books that aren't helpful"
the cheapest book you can find is the one you're using now: the web. There are tons of tutorials out there to help you get started with PHP, and to later add MySQL.
As you are a programmer already you'll have little problem with the logic behind PHP, it's just the names of the functions and what they do that is 'tricky'.
I suggest you keep your bucks in your pocket and start searching the web for tutorials, cheap and often much more 'to the point' than books.
PS: I wrote a small tutorial on using PHP with MySQL on my site: http://www.hvt-automation.nl/yapf/faq.php?cmd=viewitem&itemid=12
