Authenticating users

I new to mysql and php, i've got both running on an apache webserver. I need a page that prompts for a username and password, and then depending on the username or pass takes them to their correct page which could be in another directory. I've been looking everywhere for this, but have only found scripts similar to .htaccess authentication methods, but this is not what i'm looking for, I just want a database w/the users that will take them to the correct page depending on the user/pass not click a link then have it prompt for a password. If someone comes up with something that works i'll send u a motherboard and p2 chip (yes i know it's desperate, but i need help w/this one)!

2. You look for such values in table users where you keep info about them; fetch needed data.
3. Use header() function to redirect user to aprioprate page.

Ok all of this sounds great but it's beyond my experience so far w/mysql and php! I need an php script and a mysql database to get me going. Thanks for the help so far!

Dear steve:
i have something sound like what you are looking for, but i do it with postgres, like what Mamil say, it use header to set what pages to go. what i do is frist check the password, then i check the status of the user, if he/she is a student then i direct he/she to student web pages, else if he/she is a lecturer, then i direct he/she to lecturer homopages.

the way to do the drive them is:
header(location: your.web.address.here );

Thanks for the help, I believe that we figured out a solution though. As soon as it's working i'll post the code.
