Blobs and performance

I am curious as to how much database transactions are slowed down if you include large images as type blob.

I am using MySql 4.0. I have probably 1000 records that would need at least three images per record each the size of half a meg or so. How much speed would I gain if I just included the URL to the image rather than the image itself?

So. I'm curious. Why would you even think to store images in the database in the first place. Now, I'm assuming you are going to be displaying this data on the web, which means that it's really no sweat to put the URL to the image in the first place, and you don't have to worry about how you're going to display a gob of binary data in the middle of a page... Why go through the hassle???
