mySQL Maintance

I was wondering if some of the gurus here could help me.
I have just taken over a box, and it seems that the load keeps going high (known to go to 25 on a 2 processer SUN).
What general maintance is there that I should be doing?
I have a script that does a "CHECK TABLE XX" each day.
Is there anything else? and/or where should I be looking for where the probs could be coming from?

Turn on logging big queries and see if it's a result of bad sql. Of course, make sure that you have indexes on all fields you are using in your where statements too.
