linebreaks, carrage returns and spaces

Does anyone know how to maintain text formats (i.e line breaks, double spaces, carrage returns) when adding text to a database.

for example:
"This is line 1 sentance 1. Sentance 2 after 2 spaces.

This ia a new parragraph."

does it involve escape characters? if so how?

Should be sufficient.

yes i know .. i've uses htmlentites instead and it put the data into the database, formated correctly, but i cant retrieve it formatted. It concatenates.

i am experiencing the same problem with the linebreaks. Could you explain what joe meant with nl2br();
