$a++ in MySQL???

hi there,

i just need to update a field within my table either +1 or -1.
Is there s.th. like $a++, as known from most programming languages, in MySQL queries too?
...so that i wouldnt have to "select" the value first and then insert "value+/-1"?

...so saving one step/querry?

yeah, i know that... and also searched for "++" , "+", ... but there was an awesome lot of info...
