matching email pattern

ok...

i have a little problem with a form, that checks if an email address is valid or not.

the pattern i use for the eregi() function is as follows;

$pattern = "^{([0-9a-z]+)([0-9a-z.-]+)@([0-9a-z.-]+).([0-9a-z]+)";}

it works perfectly BUT one little flaw. you cannot submit addresses with only one letter before the "@" (f.ex. [e-mail]) which STILL would be a valid email address though.

so... how do i implement it, so that the pattern "[0-9a-z._-]" isnt required 1 or more but ZERO or more times?

Correct me if I am wrong, but at first glance I would say that this regexp will allow a domain name to begin with a ".".
