Help converting date

Hi everyone, I hope this question isn't too basic as I am fairly new. I am using PHP/MySQL and need to convert my current database date field from dd/mm/yy to yyyymmdd and have to do this without taking the database down. I have tried looking around for info on this, but haven't had luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-)
