negative substring

i know it's possible with substr();
but what about a substring in a mysql_query?

for example:

mysql_query("SELECT substring(date, -5) as date", $db);

am i just going to have pull the whole value and then process it after the query?

I would guess you are trying to get the time from a datetime field.

I think a better solution to this would be to retrieve the date using the date_format or unix_timestamp functions in mysql.

While this doesn't answer your question, it probably voids the question 🙂

nope.. doesn't answer.. doesn't help either... doesn't void it, because i'm not using datetime fields.

the value for the date is coming from a seperate website (www.mals-e.com).. it sends variables to a page i specify after an order is completed. i'm taking all of the variables it sends and putting into mysql.. and since it posts the date/time like this:: "6 Oct 2000 - 23:24", I need to chomp out the time and get rid of the rest..

I can do it with substr after I pull it, I guess... no big deal.. just wondered if it was possible.

Let me just say up front that I love manuals....

RIGHT(str,len)
Returns the rightmost len characters from the string str:

 mysql> select RIGHT('foobarbar', 4);
         -> 'rbar'

 This function is multi-byte safe.

This is a MySQL function to use in your SQL commands.
