PostgreSQL vs. Oracle, MSSQL, ...

Well, as I jump into postgresql - what significant differences are there between it and databases like Oracle and MS-SQL Server?

What kind of differences are you looking for?

One BIG difference is that PostgreSQL is freeware and Oracle is kind of very expesive.

the performance and reliability is about in the same way: nothing to many.

I did a project with PostgreSQL because it had to be a freeware solution.

If this is no demand, don't use it!

Well anything really - performance, features, functionality...

I just have introductory experience with ms-sql and oracle, but it seems they have full-featured guis, plus it seems ms-sql has a bunch of data warehousing and replication features.

I've heard that postgresql is a "mid-grade" database, so I guess I'm just wondering what makes the others high-end (performance/feature-wise).

Wow, I've had postgresql running on a data set of about 1 gig for a couple years now with ZERO failures of any kind by postgresql, since I migrated to 7.0.x, and only minor annoying issues with 6.5.x and before (i.e. some queries would bring the server to it's knees until you killed the backend that was gobbling up memory and CPU).

Other than it's missing a replication feature that's built in, it's quite a nice little stable database.
