EXCEL to MySQL

Ok ... I've searched this entire site for info on this and there is, but none of it works. Saving as a CVS (comma delimited) ... no go. It actually gets the first row and then stops. In PHPMyAdmin there is an easy import tool and when I have a word dosument parsed with , or ; and with a paragraph return at the end of each row i can get everything in. but .....

Problem is now my files are so big I can't even get them to Word. So I don't know what to use as an indicator for end of row in Excel. Any ideas on this? ... I'm in a bind.

The easiest way I found to convert from Excel to MySQL is to use MS Access.

First change your column headings in Excel to the fieldnames you want in your table.
Use MS Access and import the file, using the column headings as the field names.
Create a MyODBC connection on your PC to your MySQL database.
Export your MS Access database to your ODBC link to MySQL.

You may have to play around with column types once they are in MySQL. Date fields can also a bit tricky.

I'm sure Jon Shaws reply is helpful for those who are into the microsoft tools. Personally I'm not 😉

However, I have in many occations exported to CSV (wich actually tends to be semicolon separated values, not comma-separated) from excel and imported into mysql.

Take a look at mysqls LOAD DATA INFILE function, it's fast, it's furious, and it works 🙂

Hi,

Not sure how useful this may be, but what I tend to do is ignore the Excel export / special save as features by just selecting the entire Excel sheet and copy / pasting it into Notepad (a fine MS application ;-)).

I can then import the text file into MySQL front and export a finished SQL file.
