problem with MSSQL on a different server

Hi folks,

my problem is, that I use a webservermachine with PHp 4.06, IIS 4.0 adn NT 4.0 and a database-server with MSSQL 7.0 and NT.
The problem is, that the connection from PHP to the database hangs nearly 3 sec. and then perfom the SQL. If I install MSSQL on the webserver machine it runs very much faster (12.000 hits single server/ 2.000 hits webserver + databaseserver)

Question:
-is the mssql.dll so poor?
-should I use ODBC (normaly its very much slower)?
-is the networkconnection from php poor?
-should I use Mysql?

Please help me, but only serious answers. I dont want to fight the idelogic battle linux/win or mssql/mysql. I'm an old Mac fan and like my MacOSX, but the customer needs that microsoft stuff.

Your problem could be caused from any number of reasons. To point your finger at php for your woes is a bit unfair. I would suggest looking at your network, making sure it is configured properly. You even said it yourself,

How are you authenticating with the MSSQL server? NT Domain or SQL? It is possible the authentication speed is being limited by a very slow PDC/BDC.
