unexpected line breaks in data from Text

I have something I can't figure out. Looking for help. I have created a system that pulls Bible verses that have been stored in a database and emails them to users at requested times each day. I pulled teh data from another on-line resource, stripped the HTML I didn't need and stored in the database. When I view the data via a web interface everything looks great. However, when I receive the emails, there are "!" every so often in the text. It appeared to be "random" until I viewed the HTML source. Turns out that these are acting as line breaks or something, because the source only wraps lines at these points. I can't figure out what is causing these "!" to be inserted and how to get ride of them. Is there something else I need to be "stripping" out that I'm not??

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How about running a query on the database? Something like;

UPDATE [table] SET [field]=REPLACE([field], "\n", "");

(replacing \n with the EOL character - possibly !?).

Alternatively of course you can perform this replace during the select;

SELECT REPLACE([field], "\n", "") AS [field] FROM [table];

First! Don´t store HTML formated text in databases. Store only text.

Second! If you still want to store HTML in the database. Encode the data.

Third! Not every Mail client understands HTML which makes the first topic more current.

Fourth! Many mail protocols have a standard linebreak at 72 characters.

I understand your concern/point about not storing HTML. For the application and the fact that more won't be added other than the data I have, it made my job a lot easier. So, since I am storing it, what do you mean by encoding?

As for the 72 characters issue, I thought of that, but the characters are not happening at that interval, but something much larger, 991 it looks like, at least that's what the text editor is showing.

I guess my big question is, why in the world would it choose an "!" to put there. It's not the email viewer, because it's happening in multiple programs...
