intruder killed my mysql db

Some intruder go on my system at home and killed my mysql db. Now everytime I try and start it it crashes. I deleted it and tried a new install for it, but it still crashes when I try and start the daemon. Any idea on how to fix this? Should I just start over with a new operating system? That's all that I can think of doing...

Look for an orphan socket file. Mines in /var/lib/mysql. Delete it. Then try again.

I erased the entire directory that was built from the installation. It was at /usr/local/mysql/. should that socket file have been in there? if so, I deleted it when I erased all the files. I don't have a /var/lib/mysql. I do a ps -aux before I start the daemon and I don't see anything running until after I try and start it. Any help would be appreciated.

The socket file is not necessarily in the main mysql directories. It's location is usually defined at compile time I believe. If you are using Linux/Un*x try: locate mysql.sock

I tried that. it came back with nothing. Is there another way to see what is running besides 'ps -aux'?

• Check for my.ini or my.cnf for errors.

• Make sure that MySQL tries to find it's datafiles in the correct place

• Make sure the datafile actually exist.

• Make sure the user that MySQL runs as exist.

• Check the access rights on MySQL's directories and files.

• Restore the mysql files from your daily backup....
