hey, im not sure what you would call this, but what i want to know is this: i have a mysql table that i use to track inventory with. i use paypals shopping cart on my website to buy stuff, what i want to know is, how can i have the quanity available in inventory decrease when somebody clicks on the paypal buy button ?

I've never worked with paypals shopping cart, so the details of how to do such a thing I would have no clue in figuring out without knowing how you receive order confirmations from paypal.
That depends on how paypal sends the purchase information back to you once the client has purchased an item. If you can filter out the id and qty from paypal's return, then you can easily set a query to just subtract the qty from your inventory for that id.

or if you are feeling brave you could try using a javascript onUnload handler to fire off a php page that decreases the quantity available...

i dont know if i could even do that cause i dont think any of that information even goes through my site or server cause its all handled by them on their end.

how do they let you know what order's have been processed, and can you set-up the cart to send that information back to your site. I know that some carts you can set up to send that info back to a php or cgi srcipt that you have set up on your site.

I'm pretty sure they let you define a page to be sent back to when items are purchased. I think it would be relatively easy to add something to that url so that your script could see it. Like ?001=3&002=1&003=4, where the numbers correspond to the item product ids. If paypal doesn't have that feature, then it's shopping cart system is really lacking.
