I have to make a decision. My current host does not offer MySQL, but they do offer MS Access DB support. I don't know whether to move to a more expensive host w/ MySQL or just program with ODBC.

What types of applications do you feel can be ran efficiently with MS Access?

Also, how much traffic can Access handle as compared to MySQL?

Would I be better off to just move to a more expensive host that does offer MySQL?

Is it practical to run something such as a message forum or link database using MS Access?

MS-Access is a very very small, very slow flatfile interface.

Why doesn't your current host support mysql? it's free! 🙂

Nope.
MS-Access doesn't like many records, and it doesn't like high-concurrency.

Demand mysql or move to a different host.

You don´t need to think twice... Move from your current host to a better one.

check up http://www.od-site.com/php/ or http://hosts.php.net/ for ISPs supporting PHP and often MySQL.

I push ALL my clients to this host (www.ciwebhosting.com) they know their stuff. 800 MB to play with, MySQL, PHP 4, Unlimited Bandwidth, Unlimited E-Mails, Unlimited Alias, Ok you get the picture. Oh and I forgot OPEN SSH! YEA!! Unix backend. Nice. They are fast, reliable, and better than the other a@@hole compaines that I've worked with in my past. So check them out. No I don't work for them. I have my own design company to worry about. Lata!

Sure, Access doesn't support concurrent connections, but who cares if the queries are all shorter than .05 seconds?

Access does the job perfectly for small sites.

So, if your site gets about < 4'000 visitors connecting to your DB a day, don't worry about it - Access works fine and noone will see the difference.
One of my sites has thousands of visitors a day intensively pulling data from a +100 MB Access database containing 60'000 records in 20 tables - never any problems in 2 years of operations.
