Importing old MySQL database

I am just resurrecting an old Classifieds application we developed. It ran beautifully on a Red Hat set-up some 15 months ago. I am trying to set it up on localhost (W2K using PHPDev), however every time I try to access the database MySQl crashes. I'm unable to create a text dump of the MySQL tables as all I have access to is the old MYSQL Back-ups. I have been trying to cut'n'paste the FRM,ISD,ISM files to no avail. Any suggestions?

you may need to load the same mysql version that was running on the red hat box. raw database files typically aren't 100% compatible between versions.

its best practice to export .sql to recreate the tables/databases and export the data to a text file. takes more time to import/export, but means it can actually be used later.

Indeed, you may also run into a windows<->linux incompatibility which could mean that your database files are simple note readable on windows systems.

MySQL does say that backing up the files is a fast and acceptaby method, but back in the real world it is a massive "Bad Thing (tm)" (remember, mysql also say that subqueries are not required, and who really needs transactions anyway? 🙂 )
