Connecting to Oracle 8i

I need to connect ot Oracle 8i.
When I went to the PHP manual, I found two groups of Oracle functions:
1. Oracle 8 Functions.
2. Oracle Functions.

I help me in:
1. Which to use from these groups?
2. I need a small sample to connect ot Oracle Database.
